FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY

Photographing fine art and exhibitions is a fine art in itself. I have photographed art for major museums, galleries and artists – both for publication and digital distribution.

FLAT ART

Ideally, 2-dimensional art is best photographed unframed without plexiglass in a controlled light environment. If the work can be moved, I usually create a stable platform for art to be angled parallel to the lens. If the surface is highly reflective or over-sized (i.e. a grid or series), extra time and effort must be taken.

SCULPTURAL/OBJECT

In a controlled environment such as your studio or gallery, lights and a seamless white or gradated background are required. Metal or other highly-reflective works require more time.

Installed – or insitu – works are captured onsite using mostly available light. The full piece is captured from multiple angles, along with details and wider shots to show scale and placement.

EXHIBITIONS

Both controlled or natural light exhibitions/installations need to be carefully composed to avoid reflections or shadows. Each exhibition image is edited in Photoshop to remove any unnecessary distractions and distortions, so the artwork is represented at its best.

EDITING

Editing of fine art images is a critical and precise step in the process. Care is taken to make sure lighting and colors are accurate. Reflections, if present, are removed. Sometimes multiple passes may be required to satisfy certain requirements. All images are shot in RAW mode and final images are delivered as TIFF and JPEG formats at the highest resolution.

DIGITAL COMPOSITING

Often it is necessary to composite or mock-up a series of works as they would appear hung on a wall. In this case, the works are photographed individually then expertly assembled to fit the artist’s intent. This is the best choice for large-scale series subject to reflections or distortion if photographed together.
